Helping Kids, Helping Families: How You Can HelpChildren all over the world, from Iraq to Asia and Africa, need our help to live better lives and enjoy the rights we take for granted every day. For many children, clean clothes, decent schools, a roof over their heads or a visit to the doctor are all luxuries they may never see. Around the world, more than 200 million children work in unspeakable conditions. Instead of being in school learning their ABC's, these children are working on plantations, weaving carpets, hauling bricks, sewing garments, and manufacturing toys they will never enjoy. The well-being of children has been the inspiration and the driving purpose of the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) for 50 years. It is from this unique perspective and experience that UNICEF adds its voice, concern and expertise to the debate about child labor. UNICEF urges that priority be given to efforts for the immediate end of hazardous and exploitative child labor. Because child labor is such a complex problem, there are no easy solutions. UNICEF believes that a combined approach of education, income-generation, and advocacy are the best way of addressing the problem. Education offered must be effective, affordable and of good quality, and it should provide children with vocational skills.
