Choosing the right Nespresso machine can be tricky, but at the end of the day, they all work in much the same way. The only things you really need to consider is what features you really need and how much you are prepared to spend on your machine. Nespresso machines are quick, efficient and create virtually no mess. The compact coffee machines use k-cups or ‘pods’ of coffee granules to give you a fresh, aromatic brew with every cup. If you are a coffee connoisseur that truly loves your coffee then why not try some flavors and varieties of coffee?
Black or White?
If you prefer black coffee, then you might not consider a machine with a creamer, or milk frothing wand. However, you might need a milk wand for when your friends come to visit. Are you going to just pour cold milk, straight from the fridge into your friend’s coffee?
The Long and the Short
Some Nespresso machines have a set cup size that will only make one size of coffee. Some other machines have different programmable settings that allow you to make a short black, a late or a lungo. Machines that have the capacity for different cup sizes will generally be more expensive than a more basic machine. You will need to select differently flavored pods for different styles of coffee. It can pay to look around to ensure that you buy Nespresso coffee pods.
Different machines come with varying sized water reservoirs. If you are single and live alone, a miniature machine may be all you need. Something small and compact that can make up to 4 cups before needing to be refilled. The Inissia, for instance, is a compact little machine that only holds 700 ml of water, which it can heat up in a speedy 25 seconds! If you have a larger household, or maybe you need a machine for your office, then you will probably need a machine with a bigger water reservoir that can make 8-10 cups.
Keeping It Clean
All Nespresso machines need cleaning, but a number of removable parts may vary. Some of the basic machines may only need the reservoir and k-cup bin, emptied and rinsed weekly. Other machines with more removable parts may need to be more thoroughly stripped down and cleaned regularly.
How Smart Is Your Coffee?
At the top of the range, you can even connect your Nespresso machine to your smart phone via blue-tooth. This means that you can dial your coffee machine from the warm comfort of your bed, and wake up to a freshly brewed cup of Joe waiting for you in the kitchen.
On and Off again
Premium Nespresso machines may also come with an automatic shut-down feature. This is great if you’re one of those people that get to work and wonders if you’ve accidentally left your hair straightener turned on. The automatic shutdown feature turns your coffee machine off after a set period of time, saving energy and reducing the risk of your house burning down.
What about the environmental impact of your caffeine addiction? One of the downsides of coffee machines that use pods is the waste created by disposing of the used pods. Nespresso has addressed this via it’s used, coffee pod recycling program. In 2016 they released the Pixie, which is a miniature machine constructed from the aluminum of recycled coffee capsules.
Do you just want a machine that is functional and makes coffee, or do you want something stylish that looks good on your benchtop? There are some sexy machines available in metallic finishes or funky colored designs. Shop around and find a machine that suits your decor.
Know Your Budget
Of course, one of the factors you will use to weigh up your choices is how much you are willing to spend. However, don’t be tempted to just buy the cheapest machine you find. Some machines will only take one size of k-cup, while others can take various sizes. Consider the other benefits and features that you need from your machine including all of the things we’ve listed here. Does your machine come with a warranty? Will it fit on your kitchen bench? Is the reservoir big enough? Can it make you a coffee remotely from the comfort of your lounge room?
